Last Friday 4th June 2021, I conducted a vibrant workshop for a group of social workers as part of their continuing education at Stony Brook School of Social Welfare. We drew from personal and professional experiences and film to think about the value of the mother’s feelings of ambivalence. We discussed a variety of topics such as parenting grandchildren full time, postpartum depression, stress during Covid and the pain of new motherhood. This was so well expressed by Cathy Adam’s article in The Independent last month that we drew on as an example. Thank you to the members of the workshop for their openness and their thoughtful feedback. “If we can have more workshops like this one, exploring, understanding, and normalizing feelings, that would be wonderful. I think much of the information offered in this workshop can be generalized to other areas of life”
